Sony has announced that it will start limiting the internet speeds of its servers in Europe and the United States. This measure is being applied in response to Coronavirus and quarantine measures, which are affecting users around the world. Therefore, in order to ensure stable connections, speeds will be limited.

For now, these limitations will apply in the United States. However, they will be applied in the coming days in Europe, where Portugal is obviously included. Sony points out that it has no forecast for the end of these measures.

Impact will be greater in game transfers

Inevitably, the most noticeable impact for users will be during game downloads. Especially for users who connect their PlayStation 3 or 4 via Wi-Fi. Therefore, we recommend that you use an Ethernet cable connection, in order to obtain a more stable connection and not be affected.

Even without limitations, game downloads can sometimes be slow, taking several minutes or hours. So if you’re a PS4 or PS3 user, get ready to have limited speeds in the next few days.

Sony guarantees that gameplay will not be affected

In the same announcement, Sony says that gameplay will not be affected by speed limitations. It means that when playing online, users will not experience slow connections, leading to lag in games like Fortnite or Call of Duty.

Still, there is no guarantee that there can be a slight delay in playing online. In any case, it is a small price to pay considering the conditions in which our society is, due to the outbreak of COVID-19.
