Until now, to download updates on iOS, it was necessary to connect Apple smartphones to a Wi-Fi network. The introduction of 5G is a game-changer.
In a support note which is not yet available in French Apple describes a new option, called “Allow More Data on 5G” and which can be activated within the cellular data settings. This proposes to unlock more data when the smartphone is connected to a 5G network.
A small improvement
With this option, Apple provides high-quality FaceTime video calling and allows third-party applications to consume more cellular data to provide a smoother user experience.
According to a document from the US operator Verizon, retrieved by MacRumors, this option allows new iPhones to download system updates directly in 5G. All models using a 4G network, however, must continue to connect to Wi-Fi to download updates.
It is still good to remember that updates on iOS can only be done if the phone has more than 51% battery. However, according to the first feedback from our American colleagues, the 5G connection seems to affect the autonomy of the iPhone 12 quite heavily.
It should also be remembered that due to a technical limit within the Snapdragon chips, the 5G connection is not available when the dual SIM mode is activated. As the A14 Bionic chip was designed around this Qualcomm architecture, the issue also affects most Android smartphones.
