In an interview with CNET, Sony PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan revealed two features of the PlayStation 5. The console will support games in 4K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate.
Forbes however picked up on this revelation and made an interesting observation: the vast majority of 4K televisions do not support 120Hz rates.
Why the refresh rate is important
The refresh rate determines how many times the information is refreshed per second on your monitor or television. The higher the rate, the smoother it will appear to our eyes. To see the difference, see the video:
In slow motion, you can clearly see the difference between 240Hz, 144Hz, 120Hz and 60Hz. Currently, most 4K or Full HD televisions can only transmit 60Hz.
This situation is a headache even for Sony, which manufactures televisions. However, the fault of still not having 4K televisions with 120Hz in abundance is due to an input: HDMI.
You will not be able to fully enjoy PS5 without a new TV
The most common standard for HDMI inputs is the 2.0, which is limited to 4K resolution and 60Hz upgrade rates. In 2017 came the HDMI 2.1 standard, which supports rates of 120Hz or more.
However, the number of televisions with HDMI 2.1 is still extremely limited. The first 4K television with this standard was launched by LG earlier this year.
The other models with HDMI 2.1 are 8K newly launched televisions whose prices are pretty salty for the average consumer.
Therefore, whoever buys the PlayStation 5 has two options: buy a 4K television with HDMI 2.1 or play in the 2.0 standard. By choosing to stay in 2.0, it will be impossible to enjoy the maximum quality of PlayStation. Hopefully by the launch of the console, this pattern will become more abundant in the market.
